The idea of an massively-multiplayer real-time strategy title, however, is something else entirely. Of course, EQ was hardly the first MMO, and while the game did a lot to enhance what it meant to make an RPG massively multiplayer, RPG titles are already a natural fit for that category of gaming. ![]() Sovereign Developer: Verant Interactive Publisher: Sony Online Entertainment The Story: Regardless of your feelings about massively-multiplayer gaming, Verant and Sony Online Entertainment created a winner with EverQuest. Pantheon, why can't you be with us now? Bottom Line: Sadly, this one did not possess Olympian immortality. STORY OF TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC PCAs our readers are far too aware, PC gaming these days is too much repetition and very little originality. But that doesn't mean we aren't sad to see it go. Our Take: It's been a while since we'd last heard from the little Trojan RTS That Could, so news of its demise isn't as sharp a pinch as it may have been a few years ago. We checked in with the developer to see just what happened, and found out that the title, which had been picked up by The Learning Company (Broderbund), had been dropped when Broderbund was bought (and then sold) by Mattel a few years back. It still would be, in fact, but sadly, Pantheon never saw a world outside Frog City's offices. When we first saw the title in summer of 2000, this was impressive stuff. Developed by San Francisco-based studio Frog City, Pantheon's promise was in its refreshing setting and original take on RTS conventions. Choose whether to assist the Greeks or Trojans, enlist some poetry-worthy heroes, and manage godly resources such as worship and sweet ambrosia. The game would allow players to take the role of one of the twelve Olympian gods and actively participate in the struggle. STORY OF TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC FULLAnd not just a dry, historical Trojan War, but the full mythical deal, replete with crafty Aphrodite, cryptic Artemis and the whole bickering Greek pantheon. Pantheon Developer: Frog City The Story: What was Pantheon? Take a bunch of RTS and city-building goodness and wrap it up in a unique Trojan War setting. Right now, there's a certain other Valve title that's got all our attention, anyway … Bottom Line: Still kickin'. Given how long it's been since TF2 was first announced, though, the game that finally hits shelves will likely be quite a different beast than we could have imagined four years ago. That the title will take advantage of the impressive Source Engine should make the long wait worthwhile. The project is still in development here at Valve and we will be announcing more info after HL2 ships." Our Take: With so many other team-based, realism-soaked military shooters available right now, it's easier to pass the time waiting for Team Fortress 2. Here's the word from Valve's Doug Lombardi: "Some time after we announced Team Fortress 2, which was then being created on the HL1 tech, the decision was made to move the project to the Source Engine, the same engine used for HL2. What's up with TF2? We went right to the, ahem, source. Set to improve on the first in almost every way, TF2 was to be a stand-alone product, featuring more classes, weapons, and far more sophisticated game types than the original title. Though fans have had Counter-Strike and its updates to keep them busy, few will have forgotten that Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms, originally previewed in 1999, is still in the works. ![]() At the time, Team Fortress stood out proudly from the many cookie-cutter deathmatch modes which comprised most games' online component, and gave the versatile Quake/Half-Life engines even more sparkle. STORY OF TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC MODThe mod introduced multiplayer, class-based team combat, and was an instant hit.
